One projector is enough for a large percentage of projection mapping projects: walls, windows, signs, props, sculptures, tabletop builds, Halloween displays, art pieces, and small stage elements. Starting with one output also lets you learn the important part—surface alignment—without adding edge blending or multi-projector calibration.
1. Place the projector before you map anything
Projector position determines the geometry of the entire map. Mount or place it where the lens can see the full target without people or objects regularly crossing the beam.
Try to avoid extreme side angles unless the physical setup requires them. Mapping software can compensate for perspective, but a very oblique projector angle wastes resolution and brightness because the pixels are spread unevenly across the surface.
2. Configure the projector as an extended display
On Windows, use Windows + P → Extend. On Linux/SteamOS, use the desktop display settings to arrange the projector as a separate output. The editor should remain on your main display while the projector receives the clean output.
Use the projector’s native resolution where practical. If the projector is 1920×1080 but the operating system is feeding it a scaled or unusual mode, mapping coordinates may not behave the way you expect.
3. Start with a grid or high-contrast test pattern
Before loading your final video, use something that makes geometry obvious: a white border, checkerboard, grid, or bright color blocks. This makes it much easier to see whether edges are straight and whether an internal warp point is pulling the image too far.
4. Create one surface for each physical region
If you are mapping a cabinet with three visible doors, it is often easier to create three surfaces than to force one giant mesh to do everything. Separate surfaces let you hide, animate, color, and adjust each region independently.

5. Align the outside first, then the inside
- Match the outer corners or boundary of the real object.
- Correct rotation and overall perspective.
- Add internal mesh adjustments only where the surface still looks distorted.
- Check alignment from the audience position.
- Zoom out and look for spill around every edge.
What can you map with one projector?
- A living-room or gallery wall.
- A shop window or sign.
- A box, cabinet, sculpture, or prop.
- A Halloween or Christmas display.
- A tabletop model.
- A small stage backdrop.
- Several separate objects inside one projector’s field of view.
When one projector is not enough
You may need multiple projectors when the object is too large for one lens, multiple sides must be illuminated from different directions, shadows are unavoidable, or the required brightness exceeds one projector’s output. Seamlessly combining overlapping projectors also introduces edge blending and color matching, which is a more advanced workflow.
6. Lock the physical setup and save the project
Once everything is aligned, secure the projector, note its display settings, and save the mapping project. For temporary events, take reference photos showing projector position, stand height, zoom/focus position, and cable routing. Those photos can save a surprising amount of time if the setup must be rebuilt.
