House projection mapping turns the architecture of a home into the canvas. Instead of projecting one rectangular video across the entire facade, you align different parts of the image to windows, doors, rooflines, columns, garage panels and other features so the animation appears to belong to the building.
- Lock the projector position first. A small physical movement changes the whole map.
- Create the map at night. Ambient light can hide spill and make alignment harder.
- Map large geometry before small details. Roofline and facade first; trim and window edges later.
- Plan for repeatability. Seasonal displays are much easier when the projector returns to the same marked position every night.
1. Plan the facade and projector position
Take a straight-on photo of the house from as close as possible to the intended projector position. Measure the approximate facade width and the lens-to-house distance available in the yard. Those two values determine the throw ratio you need.

2. Hardware you actually need
- A projector with suitable brightness and throw ratio
- A computer or playback/mapping device
- A stable mount, tripod or enclosed stand
- Long enough power/video/network cabling
- Weather protection if equipment remains outdoors
- Optional external speakers or synchronized audio system
A single projector is enough to learn and can cover many homes if the lens and position work. Large/wide facades or blocked sightlines may require multiple projectors, which introduces blending and synchronization complexity.
3. Create a facade reference
Your reference is the bridge between the physical house and the animation. There are several workable methods:
- Photo trace: photograph the facade from the projector position and trace architectural features in an image editor.
- Projected grid: project a grid/test pattern and photograph the alignment.
- Physical measurements: use measured proportions for important windows, doors and roof sections.
- 3D/photogrammetry: useful for advanced content when facade depth matters.
For a first show, photo tracing plus software warping is usually enough.
4. Build the projection map
In a focused mapper such as HoloMapper, create separate surfaces for architectural regions rather than forcing the whole house into one rectangle. A garage door can be one quad, the main wall another, and irregular trim can use custom shapes, lines or curves.
- Set the projector as an extended display.
- Send a test pattern to the projector.
- Create the largest facade surface and align its corners.
- Add additional surfaces for windows, doors and other sections.
- Use mesh points only where simple corner alignment cannot solve the geometry.
- Save the project once the geometry is stable.
5. Create or buy house-mapping content
There are two broad approaches. Premade loops are fast and can look excellent, but they rarely match your architecture perfectly. Custom content can make windows crack, bricks move, doors open or rooflines glow exactly where those features exist.
You can build content in After Effects, Blender, DaVinci Resolve, TouchDesigner, generative tools, or even simple motion-graphics editors. HoloMapper can then handle final warping and placement of images, video, GIFs, text and animation presets.
6. Make the setup repeatable
Seasonal mapping becomes frustrating if you must remap from scratch every evening. Mark the tripod feet, projector height, tilt and zoom. If possible, leave the mount fixed and remove only the projector. Save the software project and keep a backup copy.
Also disable automatic projector image correction that may change geometry between power cycles unless you deliberately rely on it.
7. Weather, temperature and electrical safety
Outdoor projection brings real electrical and equipment risks. Keep connectors protected from moisture, use outdoor-rated power equipment, follow local electrical requirements, provide ventilation around enclosed projectors, and never block exhaust/intake vents. Consumer projectors are not automatically safe to leave outdoors.

Can I projection map a house with one projector?
Yes, if the projector can cover the required facade from the available position and has enough brightness for the conditions. Larger or obstructed facades may need more than one projector.
Do I need After Effects for house projection mapping?
No. After Effects is useful for custom content, but mapping and warping can be done in dedicated projection-mapping software. You can also use premade video loops.
How do I stop the projection from spilling past windows and rooflines?
Use masks, custom surfaces and corner/mesh warping in the mapping software. Build separate surfaces for major architectural regions instead of projecting one rectangle over everything.
