A four-corner quad can align the outer boundary of an image, but it cannot compensate for the way a cylinder, arch, rounded prop or uneven wall bends the pixels inside that boundary. That is what mesh warping is for.

Quick takeaways

Align the outer boundary before touching internal mesh points.

Use the fewest mesh points that solve the distortion.

Project a grid while adjusting geometry; decorative content hides errors.

Better projector placement can remove half the warping work before software begins.

On this page

Why curves distort

Mesh warping workflow

Use a test grid

Mesh density

Bezier vs mesh

Projector placement

Why curved surfaces distort projected images

A flat image assumes that every part of the projection lands on the same plane. On a curved object, the center and edges are at different distances and angles from the projector. Straight lines bend, equal-sized squares become unequal, and content can stretch dramatically around the sides.

If the object also has depth—such as a sculpture or column—parts of it may cast shadows onto other parts. Software can correct geometry, but it cannot project through an obstruction.

A practical mesh warping workflow

Place and lock the projector.

Create a surface that covers the object.

Align the outer corners/edges first.

Display a square grid or checker test pattern.

Add a small number of internal mesh points.

Move those points until grid lines visually follow the surface.

Add more points only where visible distortion remains.

Switch to real content and inspect from the audience position.

HoloMapper supports internal mesh warping on mapped surfaces and can also warp media such as images, video, GIFs and text. That makes it possible to keep typography or line art readable on geometry that would visibly distort a simple quad.

Use a grid instead of your final video

A grid exposes distortion immediately. If the squares grow wider around the cylinder, you know the horizontal mesh spacing needs correction. If horizontal lines bow, you can see exactly where the warp must move.

High-detail videos are bad calibration content because the eye is distracted by motion and texture. Calibrate with simple geometry first.

How many mesh points should you use?

There is no prize for the densest mesh. Too many points can make the surface harder to control and create little waves or kinks that were not present before. Start coarse, solve the largest distortion, then subdivide only the regions that still need help.

Gentle curve: a few internal columns/rows may be enough.

Tight cylinder: more horizontal divisions are usually needed.

Irregular sculpture: point density should follow changes in geometry, not be uniform everywhere.

Bezier curves vs mesh warping

Bezier curves are useful when the boundary itself is curved—an arch, decorative outline or organic shape. Mesh warping is useful when the interior of the image must deform to match surface depth.

Many real projects need both: a curved mask around the object plus internal mesh control to keep the content aligned across it.

Projector placement can reduce distortion before software

The more oblique the projector angle, the more aggressive the warp. If you can move the projector closer to the audience’s viewing axis and aim more directly at the object, you may gain brightness, focus consistency and easier geometry at the same time.

For lens and throw planning, see the projector guide. If you are just learning mapping, start with the beginner guide before tackling compound curves.

Frequently asked questions

Can projection mapping work on a cylinder?

Yes. A cylinder is a classic mesh-warping problem. Use a grid, align the outside boundary, then add internal mesh columns to correct horizontal stretching around the curve.

What is the difference between corner pinning and mesh warping?

Corner pinning moves only the outside corners. Mesh warping adds internal control points so the content can deform across curved or irregular geometry.

Can software fix shadows caused by a 3D object?

No. Warping can correct geometry, but a projector cannot illuminate a surface hidden behind another part of the object. Physical projector placement or additional projectors may be required.

Learn how to map cylinders, arches, curved props and uneven surfaces using
